World Problem
For our last project of the year, our class researched a world wide problem and came up with a biotech solution to solve it. My group Caitlin, Olivia, and I decided to focus on deforestation in Brazil. 92,665 to 96,526 square miles of land in Brazil are used for soybeans and 80% of the amazon is destined for cattle feed. This is leading to deforestation because there is more of a need for soybeans and land to grow but also the cattle need room as well. This is a huge problem but we only decided to focus on brazil because that is where most of the cattle farmers grow their crops such as soybeans which are one of the most popular. Our solution to this problem is to genetically modify the soybean plant to become larger which would mean we wouldn't have to cut down more trees because the soybeans would be larger and the need for space would go away.
Concepts
GMO- an organism who's genome has been altered by the techniques of genetic engineering so its DNA contains one or more genes not normally found there
IAglu gene- a growth gene that has already been found in the soybean plant that we can use to make the play larger
Particle bombardment- a biolistic technology that is a direct physical method of introducing nucleic acids into cells

Reflection
This project in my opinion was very fun and I believe I worked well on this project because I got to have my friends in my group with me. It helped having my friends in my group because we collaborated really well and we split the work equally and got a lot done. We were very efficient with our work and turned all of the worksheets in on time. I would say to make this project even better we could have been on our phones a little bit less. We only went on our phones when we were all done with the worksheet and had turned it in already, but we could have worked on the next step in that time when we relaxed and went on our phones. But we did a lot of things right with this project such as how much time and energy we put into research and making sure our project was the best it could be. We used slides for our presentation and it was a great choice because the slides were very organized and clear what we were saying. Overall I believe this project went really well for all groups and I know I learned a lot of what world problems were going on around me.
